Jorge Mercado: Day of the Dead Tree of Life Ceramic
This Day of the Dead Tree of Life by Jorge Mercado of Izúcar de Matamoros, Puebla is built around a wonderfully self-assured Catrina.
She stands at the center in a bright orange dress, hands resting at her waist, framed by an arch covered with painted flowers, leaves, and repeating geometric borders. Two skulls hang beside her, giving the composition movement and reinforcing its playful meditation on death.
The details are especially appealing. Owls perch at the top of the arch, flower buds rise around the figure, and large blossoms anchor both sides of the sculpture. The hanging skulls sway from small wires, while the Catrina herself is partly constructed with wire arms and stems, a technique that gives the otherwise solid ceramic piece a surprising sense of lightness.
Catrina figures have become one of the best-known images of Día de los Muertos, representing the idea that death ultimately makes everyone equal, regardless of wealth or social position. The owls add another layer of symbolism. In several Mesoamerican traditions, owls were associated with darkness, death, and the supernatural world, making them particularly fitting companions for this skeletal figure.
Jorge Mercado draws on the famous Izúcar de Matamoros Tree of Life tradition, but gives it a distinctly Day of the Dead character. The brilliant orange ground, purple and green ornamentation, suspended skulls, flowers, and skeletal woman make this a particularly vivid example of contemporary Mexican folk art from Puebla.
