This wonderfully whimsical ceramic devil skull by Saul Montesinos of Izúcar de Matamoros, Puebla combines a grinning calavera with striped horns and broad red wings. The forehead is covered with intricate hand-painted patterns in pink, green, purple, and gold, contrasting beautifully with the gray skull and deep red wings.
Playful rather than sinister, this winged devil reflects the irreverent humor found throughout Mexican Day of the Dead folk art. A small loop on the back allows the sculpture to be displayed on a wall, where its dramatic silhouette and vivid color make it especially striking.
