Saul Montesinos: Little Wall Hanging Frida with Flowers Ceramic
This colorful Frida Kahlo skull by Saul Montesinos of Izúcar de Matamoros, Puebla is framed with large flowers, calla lilies, and tiny dangling parrots. The forehead is covered with Montesinos’ intricate painted patterns, while the floral crown and gray calavera face give the piece a distinctly Day of the Dead character.
The parrots are a particularly fitting detail, recalling Frida Kahlo’s love of animals and the birds she kept at the Blue House. Small enough to rest in the hand, this ceramic sculpture packs an impressive amount of color, modeling, and personality into a compact piece.
