Saul Montesinos: Frida Skeleton Ofrenda Ceramic

This wonderfully expressive Frida Kahlo ofrenda by Saul Montesinos of Izúcar de Matamoros, Puebla brings together two unmistakable Mexican icons: Frida and Día de los Muertos.

Her calavera face is crowned by a sculpted braid, striped in turquoise and pink, while the forehead is covered with the fine, brilliantly colored patterns so characteristic of Montesinos’ work.

The altar below is has miniature offerings. Two tall candles flank Frida’s face, while fruit, Day of the Dead bread, and food are arranged across the base, including watermelon and other carefully modeled pieces.

A pair of tiny parrot earrings adds movement and a very personal reference to Frida Kahlo. Frida adored animals and kept parrots at the Blue House in Coyoacán, where they appeared in her paintings and became part of the intimate world she created around herself. Montesinos has even included a small decorated skull among the offerings, creating an ofrenda within an ofrenda.

Frida Kahlo has become closely associated with Mexican identity, mortality, and the visual language of Día de los Muertos, making her a natural subject for contemporary Mexican folk artists. Here Montesinos does not present her solemnly. The broad skeletal smile, extravagant hair, miniature foods, candles, and parrots turn the piece into a celebration of memory rather than a portrait of mourning.
Made in the celebrated polychrome ceramic tradition of Izúcar de Matamoros, this Day of the Dead sculpture combines intricate hand modeling with exceptionally detailed painting. Every surface invites a closer look, from the geometric decoration across Frida’s forehead to the tiny offerings gathered at her feet.
