With its wings spread wide around a compact owl body, this extraordinary alebrije has an almost heart-shaped silhouette. Designed to hang on a wall or from the ceiling, the carving feels both sculptural and architectural, with the owl seeming to hover in mid-flight.
Saul Aragon carved the entire figure from a single piece of copal wood, including the sweeping wings, tail, body, and talons. The painting is exceptionally detailed. Layer after layer of tiny geometric motifs follows the individual feathers in deep cobalt, turquoise, teal, and violet, while the body shifts to a refined palette of gray, white, and black. Around the face, brilliant greens and blues frame the owl's warm amber eyes.
Seen from behind, the wings become almost abstract, forming a beautiful heart-like composition filled with rhythmic bands of fine pattern. From the front, the large talons and intense gaze give the owl surprising presence and character.
