Saul Aragon: Dancing Octopus Alebrije

This octopus by Saul Aragon is a mesmerizing blend of marine grace and Oaxacan craftsmanship. Its eight tentacles spiral outward in a deft dance, each painted with precise bubble-dot patterns in glowing oranges and teals—a vivid vocabulary of marine rhythm. The curving form suggests fluid motion, as though the creature is gliding underwater, even in stillness.

Aragon is more than a talented carver; he’s a steward of both cultural and environmental heritage. He is a founding member of Ecoalebrijes, a collective of carvers dedicated to preserving the regional forests from which copal wood is harvested, supporting sustainable practices. He works from Arrazola, Oaxaca, a town known for woodcarving and alebrijes, often collaborating with his wife, Alma Arreola.
