Salvador & Gabriela Cruz: Devil Mask Alebrije
Salvador & Gabriela Cruz: Devil Mask Alebrije
Salvador and Gabriela Cruz carve this diablo mask in the spirit of Mexico's devil dances, masks worn in performances that stage the old fight between light and darkness, rooted in native mask-making practices blended with imagery brought by the Spanish. The rich magenta finish and twisting striped horns give it that same theatrical presence those dances call for, something meant to be seen moving under firelight, not just admired on a shelf.
The face leans playful rather than purely menacing; a sly, narrow-eyed smirk and an elongated snout give it a mischievous, almost Grinch-like grin, layered patterning across the cheeks and horns catching light differently with every turn.
An authentic piece of Oaxacan wood carving, hand-carved and hand-painted from copal wood, signed by both artists on the reverse.
