Rocio Fabian: Impressive Bat Woodcarving
This magnificent bat by Rocío Fabián looks as if it has just unfolded its wings to glide out of a cave at dusk. The body is painted in soft grays and silvers, covered with impossibly fine geometric patterns that feel almost like engraved metal or ancient armor. Each tiny line and dot is perfectly placed, forming concentric circles and feather-like bands that show just how steady Rocío’s hand is.
Then you reach the wings, and they’re a surprise of rich copper and warm terracotta tones, glowing against the cool body. The designs inside the wings radiate like suns and shields, giving the bat a powerful, protective presence. Seen from the back, those circular motifs turn the piece into a moving mandala.
Bats are important animals in Mesoamerican culture, creatures of the night, change, and hidden worlds—and Rocío captures that mystery without losing the charm of the alebrije tradition. It’s a piece that feels both ancient and very contemporary, full of strength, balance, and quiet drama.
