Raymundo Fabian: Extraordinary Moonlit Wolf Alebrije

This little wolf alebrije by Raymundo Fabian is extraordinary for how much detail is concentrated into such a small carving. The wolf sits with its muzzle lifted in a howl, its curled tail tucked alongside the body, creating a compact silhouette that still feels full of movement.

The carving itself is especially beautiful. Raymundo has created shallow bas-relief-like fur, particularly around the neck and tail, so the painted patterns follow raised, feathered sections rather than a completely smooth surface. Over that texture he builds an exquisite monochrome design in black, silver, gray, and white, filling the wolf with spirals, tiny checks, fine lines, dots, layered leaf-like forms, and even little fish tucked into the pattern. The two golden eyes are a striking interruption in the otherwise restrained palette, giving the wolf an alert, luminous expression.

Wolves and other canids had an important place in ancient Mexican belief and ritual, with associations that could include the passage between the worlds of the living and the dead. Here, the upward howl, silvery palette, and extraordinarily fine painting give Raymundo Fabian’s small Oaxacan wood carving an almost nocturnal presence.
