Miguel Xuana: Copal Wood Bull Mask
Miguel Xuana: Copal Wood Bull Mask
This striking bull mask by Miguel Xuana of San Martin Tilcajete has a strong ceremonial presence. Hand-carved from copal wood, the long, upward-curving horns give the piece an immediate sense of power, while the narrow face and pointed ears create a more elegant profile than a naturalistic bull.
The painting is exceptionally fine. Bright turquoise and deep blue cover the forehead, while the muzzle and horns are filled with minute geometric patterns in black, cream, rust, gold, and orange.
An authentic piece of Oaxacan folk art, this mask is entirely hand-carved and hand-painted by Miguel Xuana in San Martin Tilcajete, one of Oaxaca’s best-known woodcarving communities. The natural copal wood, artist’s handwork, and distinctive painted design give the piece the individuality that collectors look for in genuine Mexican folk art.
