Exceptional large one-piece jaguar-skull sculpture by top Oaxaca artist Luis Pablo. This unique piece reflects the mysticism and beauty of Mexico's pre-Columbian cultures. The jaguar in Mesoamerica was considered the ruler of the underworld, a spirit guardian which protected humans from the evil of both the earth and the underworld. The sculpture is impressive. Both the jaguar head and the skull are skillfully carved; imagine the difficulty of carving from one piece of wood two different figures, one inside of the other and both perfectly formed. The spirals design on the head of the Jaguar represents the constant cycle of life and death. An exceptional sculpture!
