Luis Pablo: Mondrian Longhorn Bull Woodcarving
Luis Pablo honors Mondrian in a longhorn bull alebrije.
He stands low and wide; this bull, his chest and haunches shaded and rounded, giving the illusion of padding, so that the muscles beneath seem to shift as you move around him.
Luis Pablo studied painting after establishing himself as a woodcarver, and the painter's hand shows here more than anywhere else in his work. The body is built in broad planes of deep orange and crimson divided by bold black lines, each zone of color shaded from light to dark so that the figure carries real physical weight.
The approach recalls Mondrian, that same visual language of thick black outlines containing distinct color fields, except that Luis Pablo bends it around a living form and breathes volume into it.
Across cultures and centuries, the bull has carried the same essential meaning: raw strength, solar energy, the force that moves the earth. Diego Rivera painted bulls as emblems of Mexican resilience. This one earns that company.
His head is angled low, his eyes watchful and deliberate, the posture of an animal alert and exploring its surroundings.
His hand-painted candle on the base marks it as a Luis Pablo original piece..
