Luis Pablo: Fox Mask
Luis Pablo: Fox Mask
Luis Pablo is celebrated as one of the great masters of woodcarving in Oaxaca. He designs, carves, and paints all of his works himself, earning admiration for his skill and dedication.
This piece is a carved wall mask featuring a fox head in full relief, with sharp ears and a tapered snout. The back is hollowed out so the mask sits flush against a wall, emphasizing how Luis Pablo uses the painting to create visual impact by simplifying the form.
The mask is divided into two color zones. A deep cobalt blue covers the crown and outer face, with the entire surface adorned with rows of pale oval drops that catch the light, resembling scales or raindrops. The muzzle and eye area transition to mint and turquoise, painted with fine short dashes that emulate fur. At the center, two amber-gold eyes gaze out with calm. The interiors of the ears are white, with black-edged rims decorated with small orange dots.
In Zapotec culture, every person is said to be born with a spirit animal, known as a toná, which influences their character and guides them through life. The fox toná symbolizes cunning, adaptability, and intelligence, adding cultural depth to the artwork.
