This cat alebrije by Luis Pablo has an irresistible, almost coquettish attitude. The cat sits elegantly, its head tilted dramatically to one side as if posing for attention, while its long, curled tail and neck suggest movement. The expression is playful and slightly theatrical, with large golden eyes, a bright blue nose, and a tiny pink mouth.
Luis Pablo keeps the painting bold and modern. Deep black stands out against bright orange, white, burgundy, turquoise, and pink. Fine dash marks suggest soft fur on the white and orange areas, while large oval patches break up the body into simple graphic shapes. Even the turquoise toes add a clever finishing touch.
The carving is nicely balanced, with the arched back, raised head, and curling tail forming an elegant shape. Hand-carved from copal wood and hand-painted in Oaxaca, this expressive piece shows Luis Pablo’s skill in giving an animal a clear personality with just a few bold gestures and carefully picked colors.
