Luis Pablo: Gorgeous Caracal Alebrije

This caracal alebrije by Luis Pablo has a poised, almost regal presence. The long legs, lean body, alert golden eyes, and extraordinary tufted ears immediately identify the wild cat, while Luis Pablo exaggerates those distinctive ear tufts with natural fiber, making them one of the most memorable features of the carving.

The painting is bold and wonderfully controlled. Warm orange and red cover much of the body, broken by cream, black, turquoise, and deep blue. Short golden marks suggest fur across the coat, while the white chest and belly are covered with fine black strokes. The striped tail adds a crisp graphic accent, and the cool turquoise inside the ears creates a beautiful contrast with the fiery body color.

What makes the piece especially successful is the balance between natural observation and stylization. Luis Pablo captures the caracal’s alert, elegant character without trying to reproduce it literally. Instead, he reduces the animal to strong lines, confident color, and an unmistakable silhouette. Hand-carved from copal wood and hand-painted in Oaxaca, this is a sophisticated contemporary alebrije with tremendous personality.
