Luis Pablo: Sunshine Capybara Alebrije

This capybara alebrije by Luis Pablo turns the world's largest rodent and turns it into a very stylish Oaxacan wood carving. The body is compact, the legs are short, the ears are rounded, and the muzzle is broad, all of which are very familiar features. Luis Pablo does just enough to simplify the form to give it his very individual contemporary stamp.
Warm ochres and golds dominate the majority of the body, interrupted by orange markings, burgundy feet and a bright collar of cobalt blue circles. Subtle painted strokes indicate the coarse fur, the large golden eyes, and the pink on the nose, giving the face an adorable expression. The pattern across the hindquarters becomes broader and more graphic, with large areas of orange and gold following the contour of the body.
What I like about it most is the balance between simplicity and character. Luis Pablo doesn't go over the top with detail. He uses simple forms, good color and a well placed pattern to really bring out the capybara's particular proportions. It's a hand carved copal wood piece, hand painted in Oaxaca and a very fun, very contemporary alebrije from one of Oaxaca's leading woodcarvers.
