Jorge Mercado: Day of the Dead Charro and Catrina Couple
Jorge Mercado: Day of the Dead Charro and Catrina Couple
This striking Day of the Dead ceramic couple by Jorge Mercado Castillo of Izúcar de Matamoros, Puebla pairs an elegant charro with a beautifully dressed female calavera. Both figures are painted in rich shades of magenta, purple, and pink, with intricate hand-painted borders covering their clothing from top to bottom.
The charro stands proudly in his broad sombrero and fitted suit, one hand at his waist and the other near his holstered pistol. Beside him, the female figure wears a long traditional dress with a patterned shawl draped over her shoulders. Together they have the formal presence of a couple posing for a portrait, reimagined with the humor and grace of Día de los Muertos.
Their elongated forms, exposed skeletal features, and elaborate painted decoration make the pair a wonderful example of the polychrome ceramic tradition of Izúcar de Matamoros.
