This elegant dog by Isabel Fabian has a wonderfully alert presence, with enormous upright ears, a long graceful neck, and a slender tail curling high behind the body. The carving is especially striking along the shoulders, where deep ribbed forms create a sense of movement and give the figure an almost architectural quality.
Isabel’s painting follows the contours of the sculpture with extraordinary precision. Warm browns, muted rose, ochre, red, and touches of gold are organized into fine geometric bands, feather-like lines, dots, and intricate repeating motifs. The ribbed shoulder sections are emphasized with alternating bands of color, while the face is covered with delicate linear patterns that frame the expressive golden eyes.
Hand-carved from copal wood and meticulously hand-painted, this authentic Oaxacan alebrije shows the mastery and patience that distinguish Isabel Fabian’s work. Every angle reveals another carefully resolved detail, making the sculpture feel as considered from the back and sides as it does from the front.
