Huichol: Etched Hummingbirds Gourd
This beautiful natural gourd has been transformed into a work of art through the traditional Huichol (Wixárika) technique of hand etching. The artist has carefully scraped away the surface layer to reveal a warm, earthy tone beneath, creating a stunning contrast with the crisp white designs.
All around the gourd, delicate hummingbirds glide between radiating flowers. Each bird is etched with fine, rhythmic strokes that give the wings movement and texture, while the surrounding blossoms open like bursts of light. The design wraps the entire surface, turning the gourd into a continuous story of harmony, nature, and motion.
Gourds have long been used by Huichol artisans—not only as containers but also as surfaces for ceremonial and decorative expression. After the fruit dries naturally, the shell is cleaned, sanded, and prepared as a canvas. Though often covered in yarn or beads, this piece showcases the more intimate, meticulous tradition of carving and engraving by hand.
The result is a graceful, organic vessel celebrating life, flight, and the natural beauty cherished by the Huichol people.
