Huichol Art: Joy Bird Beaded Art
Huichol Art: Joy Bird Beaded Art
This small bird stands on thin wire legs, its body carved from wood, its back given over entirely to chaquira beadwork, tiny glass beads set one by one into wax and resin. The diamond shape of the pattern recalls the ojo de dios, or tsikuri, a woven eye motif central to Wixarika tradition, believed to hold the power to see and understand things otherwise unknown, and traditionally made to protect a child from birth through the first years of life.
The rest of the body stays unbeaded, showing off the smooth, polished grain of the wood itself, a deliberate contrast that lets the carving and the beadwork each stand on their own.
A genuinely hand-carved, hand-beaded piece of Mexican folk art rooted in Wixarika craft, small enough to sit on a shelf and detailed enough to reward a closer look.
