Emmanuel Ramirez has painted the universe onto this pug, and the effect is astonishing. Every surface is part of a cosmological story, all carved from a single piece of copal wood.
The pose is calm, a pug stretched out in a sphinx position, paws forward, tail long behind. But the painting takes the whole animal somewhere else entirely. The face is soft mint green with a small lavender nose and the characteristic pushed-in muzzle of the breed. The eyes hold tiny white stars floating inside deep magenta irises, like planets suspended in the dark. The head and ears are painted in dense pink and cream fan patterns that read almost like a ceremonial headdress. Around the collar area, a pink strap that seems to hold the piece together.
The legs are the first hint of the cosmology. Emmanuel has painted them in a three-dimensional cube pattern that creates the illusion of infinite depth, and scattered across the cubes, brilliant white stars, some with radiating points, floating through what looks like a stretch of deep space. The body between shoulders and haunches is banded in soft horizontal stripes of pink and mint, a moment of calm before the tail.
The tail is where Emmanuel really lets himself go. From a single central point on the back haunches, a perfect spiral vortex unfurls in mint and pink, swirling outward across the dog's tail. It is a spiral galaxy. It is the Milky Way rendered as a pug's back. Turn the piece and the swirl continues, an entire universe in motion.
Emmanuel continues the deep Mesoamerican tradition of the dog as cosmic companion. The xoloitzcuintli, the sacred dog, was believed to guide the souls of the dead through the underworld to their final rest, traveling across rivers and stars. Emmanuel's pug carries that same journey painted onto its body, a small companion moving quietly through infinity.
