Cindy Perez: Etched Butterflies Mata Ortiz

Delicate butterfly olla by Mata Ortiz artist Cindy Perez. The form is beautifully rounded and full, hand-built and hand-polished to a soft finish . Cindy's signature shape, generous and serene, which she completes with a crocheted pottery ring, so the piece rests securely and elegantly.

The decoration combines two techniques: a dense field of fine red sgraffito cross-hatching covers much of the vessel, and over it, Cindy has painted a flight of butterflies in soft, naturalistic tones, sage green, dusty rose, warm brown, pale blue — each one outlined in black with tiny white dots along the wings. The translucent quality of the painting is remarkable, the colors pooling gently within each wing like watercolor, giving the butterflies a lightness that feels entirely appropriate to the subject.

The back of the olla shifts mood entirely: a quieter scene of flowering plants and ferns painted directly on the cream ground, with just one or two butterflies drifting nearby. It is an intimate, almost botanical composition that contrasts beautifully with the busy, joyful abundance on the front.

A piece that rewards turning slowly in your hands.
