This Cesar Matias mockingbird alebrije is practically a little jewel. It's very well carved, elegant, and compact, with delicate feet and a long, flowing tail that looks beautiful from all angles.
The painting is what really makes this piece.
Cesar works with geometric patterns throughout the surface in rust, ochre, gold, burgundy, and turquoise. Tiny triangles, Greek key, concentric circles, feathered bands, and dotted details are all placed with care to the form of the bird rather than just as decoration. The turquoise on the crown and body is a good contrast and brings the warmer tones to the fore.
The face is the most expressive. The eyes are beautifully painted, the head is very well defined, and the little pointed beak gives the mockingbird a very alert, intelligent look.
This is hand-carved from copal and hand-painted in Oaxaca. It's small, but it's a superb example of contemporary Oaxacan wood carving and very much the work of a skilled artist.
