Carolina Sandoval & Kengi Santos: Skleton Jaguar Sculpture

Fabulous half-skeleton jaguar sculpture by Oaxacan woodcarving artists Carolina Sandoval and Kengi Santos. It is so refreshing to see new artists with an innovative style of creating alebrijes. Carolina and Kengi are a married couple of artists, in their 20s who used to work for other big workshops. They decided to launch their own workshop and create a name for themselves. They named their studio Gica. One of their pieces is exhibited in Oaxaca's Popular Art Museum.  The jaguar is very well-carved and expressive. The painting is contemporary and very well executed.  Notice how one side represents life, with water and sun colors, and the other is Mictlan, the place where the dead go. I really like the use of colors on this fantastic piece!
