Armando Jimenez: Golden Crow Woodcarving
Armando Jimenez: Golden Crow Woodcarving
Armando Jimenez carves from the same Arrazola tradition his family has worked for four generations, tracing back to Manuel Jiménez Ramírez, the carver credited with starting Oaxacan wood alebrijes. This crow keeps its head down and beak parted, caught in the middle of a step rather than at rest.
Golden polka dots cover the body edge to edge over black, a dense, almost beaded surface that gives way without warning at the wing. There, the painting drops the dots entirely and shifts into long bands of teal, seafoam, and powder blue, each feather lined with white down along its length. The eye picks up the same palette, a yellow center ringed in teal. Black talons tipped in white grip the ground.
This piece is beautiful and truly represents the kind of work that has established this family's reputation.
