Anabel Cruz: One-Piece Fierce Jaguar Impressive Painting Alebrije
This exquisite jaguar alebrije by Oaxacan artist Anabel Cruz has a wonderful sense of tension and movement. The jaguar crouches low with its mouth open, teeth exposed, and tail curling dramatically upward, giving the impression that it has been caught in the instant before a leap. Even from the back, the long sweep of the body and tail keeps the sculpture in motion.
What makes the carving especially impressive is that the entire jaguar is carved from one single piece of wood. There are no glued or removable legs, ears, tail, or other elements. Achieving this elongated pose, particularly the deeply curved tail and the open mouth, requires careful planning from the original block of wood and leaves very little room for error.
Anabel Cruz covers the jaguar with extraordinarily dense geometric painting in glowing shades of rust, red, ochre, orange, and deep burgundy. Broad areas on the shoulders and hindquarters are filled with dimensional-looking hexagonal forms, while bands of triangles, stepped motifs, fine lines, and repeating diamonds follow the animal’s anatomy. The restrained palette allows the complexity of the pattern to stand out without overwhelming the sculptural form.
The jaguar has held powerful meaning in Mesoamerica for centuries. In ancient Oaxaca and throughout Mesoamerica, it was closely associated with power, warfare, rulership, and the supernatural, admired as one of the region’s most formidable predators.
Anabel's jaguar, with its fierce expression and muscular, stalking pose, is especially well suited to that history, while her intricate contemporary painting makes the piece unmistakably her own.
