Two broad turquoise rings frame the amber-colored eyes of this owl by Carolina Sandoval. Fine strokes radiate around each eye, giving the rounded face a wonderfully alert expression. Golden-yellow dots brighten its chest, set against burgundy wings with scattered orange accents.
Turn the owl around and an orange flame-shaped design sweeps up its back. Hand-carved from copal wood and hand-painted in Oaxaca, this compact alebrije stands 3.5 inches tall. The photograph in the hand shows its scale, while the side views reveal the gentle curve of its body.
