This colorful ceramic Nativity crèche by Jorge Mercado Castillo of Izúcar de Matamoros, Puebla places the Holy Family at the center of a richly ornamented Tree of Life form. Mary and Joseph stand beside the infant Jesus, framed by sweeping green arches, large flowers, birds, angels, and star-shaped ornaments. A small hanging sphere above the figures suggests the guiding star over Bethlehem.
What makes the piece especially appealing is the way Mercado Castillo blends the Nativity story with the exuberant decorative language of Izúcar de Matamoros ceramics. The arch is covered with finely painted borders in purple, pink, turquoise, green, and orange, while the stars, flowers, birds, and angels project outward from the structure, giving the crèche wonderful depth.
The Nativity has long been an important subject in Mexican folk art, especially in nacimientos and Trees of Life. Here, the familiar Christmas scene is interpreted through the brilliant polychrome tradition of Puebla, turning the crèche into both a devotional image and a lively example of contemporary Mexican folk art.
