Manuel Cruz: Fire Horse Woodcarving
Manuel Cruz: Fire Horse Woodcarving
A spectacular one-piece woodcarving, this sculpture by top Oaxacan artist Manuel Cruz captures a horse in movement, with its hindquarters settled, front legs folded against its chest, and head turned sharply. The mane fans out behind like a crown of pointed flames, all carved from a single block of copal, showcasing masterful craftsmanship. The flame points of the mane are individually carved peaks, while the tail sweeps back in one continuous curve, and the front legs are lifted free of the body.
Ruvi, Manuel's wife, paints the horse's body in deep ochres and golds, skillfully applying the colors line by line. A large, spiraling sun rests on the shoulder, and larger medallions decorate the haunches. Greek key borders run along the back, reminiscent of architectural moldings. The chest features a checkered shield, the flanks are filled with diamond grids and grecas, and accents of magenta, teal, and red flicker throughout the warm gold background. The hooves are a deep grey, adorned with small spirals like stamped seals.
The mane and tail serve as a stunning counterbalance, painted in cobalt and turquoise that seamlessly blend, edged with cream lines. Against the warm gold body, the blue mane evokes a sky above the earth, symbolizing a bridge between worlds and reflecting cultural continuity.
This horse embodies a Spanish arrival, brought to the Americas after the conquest. To adorn it with Mitla grecas and codex sun rosettes is to celebrate a rich cultural exchange, imparting the painted dignity of a thousand-year-old animal upon a sixteenth-century newcomer. The piece resonates profoundly because of that extraordinary fusion. And the timing fits perfectly. 2026 is the Year of the Fire Horse in the Chinese zodiac, a sign that comes around once every sixty years and is known for arriving with extra spirit. Manuel's horse, mane already in flame, was made for it.
