Luis Pablo: Spectacular Macaw Woodcarving

Luis Pablo has carved many birds in his career, but the scarlet macaw brings out something special in him. This piece is a magnificent example, carved entirely from a single piece of copal wood, wings, tail, body, base, all one.

The pose is so dynamic. Both wings open wide, lifting toward the sky, tail fanned out behind. The bird is mid-launch from a tree stump base, beak open, ready to call. The carving alone is a feat. To take a single block of copal and release a bird in this position, with the wings extended this far from the body, requires both vision and technical mastery.

The painting brings the macaw fully to life. The body is deep vermillion red, covered in concentric orange dots. The face carries the macaw's actual markings: the white facial patch with its delicate red feather lines around the eye, the amber gold iris, the hooked ivory beak.

The scarlet macaw was sacred to the ancient Maya and revered across Mesoamerica as a bird of the sun. Its red, yellow, and blue feathers were associated with fire, sky, and the cycles of the day, and macaw feathers were treasured trade goods carried across thousands of miles. In Oaxaca today, the macaw remains a symbol of beauty, voice, and pure expression.
