Luis Pablo: Mythical Griffin Woodcarving

This magnificent griffin by Luis Pablo, a top Oaxacan master who carves and paints each piece himself, combines an eagle's front half with a lion's back half. The carved  eagle features a curved golden beak, fierce blue-rimmed eyes, and carved teardrop scales, while the lion has muscled haunches and a tufted tail. The wings fit into recessed grooves, allowing for easy handling and shipping.

Luis Pablo’s signature textured paint enhances the piece, with the eagle’s plumage resembling a cobblestone patterned in deep red and gold, and the lion's body painted in warm red ochre with wavy stripes and glyphs.

The griffin is a creature from Old World mythology, symbolizing dual divinity and noble courage. It has been represented throughout history, from ancient Mesopotamian seals to medieval heraldry, and has been embraced by Mexican folk artists. Luis Pablo signs his work with a small hand-painted candle, symbolizing the light it brings into its new home.
