Francisca Calvo: Wise Crow Woodcarving

Wonderful crow by Oaxacan woodcarving artist Francisca Calvo.
Crows are among the most intelligent and watchful of birds—curious, loyal to their flock, and known to remember human faces for years. Francisca captures this perfectly: her copal wood crow stands with wings spread and beak raised, alert and fully present, as if sizing up a situation before anyone else even notices.
The painting is deep and mysterious, dark charcoal and black are covered in white spirals and fine lines, with one burst of gold on the beak. The tight concentric circles here immediately catch the eye. Meanwhile, the hollowed circular openings in each wing are a bold artistic choice, giving the piece a graphic, almost architectural quality.
The piece is as beautiful as the crows themselves.
