With its wide golden eyes and wonderfully rounded posture, this monkey by Ana Laura Salmeron seems to be studying whoever comes close. The broad face, deeply bent legs, and tail curling beneath the body give the carving a compact, expressive silhouette. Brilliant turquoise-blue details stand out against the warm copper and orange, drawing attention to the face and folded limbs.
The hand-painted design follows the sculpture’s shape with extraordinary care. Narrow bands of triangles, fine black lines, and golden teardrop motifs sweep over the shoulders and continue across the rounded back. Tiny geometric patterns fill the haunches, while blue accents bring a crisp contrast to the warmer colors. Viewed from behind, this Oaxacan wood carving reveals an entirely different arrangement of flowing patterns, every bit as considered as the expressive face.
