Luis Pablo: Sitting Unicorn Woodcarving

Every so often a piece arrives that stops you where you stand. This authentic Alebrije unicorn by Luis Pablo Mendoza is one of them.

Luis Pablo is one of Oaxaca’s great woodcarving masters, an artist who designs, carves, and paints everything himself. The unicorn sits in a calm, watchful pose, front legs planted, hind legs folded beneath. The proportions are noble.

The painting balances softness and bold. The body is bright white, covered edge to edge in fine black dashes in Luis Pablo’s signature textured technique, giving the whole surface a soft, almost furry quality.

In Oaxacan alebrije tradition, real and mythical animals share the same space. The unicorn is not from Mesoamerican mythology, but in Luis Pablo’s hands it takes on the character of a spirit animal all the same, calm, wise, and quietly powerful. This piece is signed Oaxaca art at its most refined, a serious work of Mexican folk art from one of the artists who defines the tradition today.
