Saul Montesinos works out of Izúcar de Matamoros, Puebla, a town with generations of ceramic tradition behind it. He learned the craft as a boy in his father’s workshop, in the same style established locally by Alfonso Castillo Orta, whose painted clay figures put the town’s pottery on the international map.
This piece captures a scene rooted in everyday rural Mexican life, a farmer guiding a yunta, the traditional pair of yoked oxen still used to work small plots of land across the countryside, a spotted calf trailing close behind. The figures are built up from clay and finished entirely by hand, each surface covered in the kind of dense, fine-line painted pattern Izúcar ceramics are known for, floral borders, geometric trim, and layered detail that takes a steady hand and real patience to execute.
