Rocio Fabian: Bat Alebrije

This wonderful bat alebrije by master artisan Rocio Fabian showcases her unmatched precision and creativity. Hand-carved from copal wood and hand-painted with incredible detail, the piece radiates with black, silver, and red tones, covered in intricate geometric and spiral patterns. The broad, outstretched wings give the bat a dynamic presence, as if it has just taken flight under the moonlight.

In pre-Columbian Mexico, bats carried powerful symbolism. They were associated with darkness, sacrifice, and the underworld, but also with renewal and transformation, since they live between night and day, life and death. In Mayan culture, the bat god Camazotz was a fearsome guardian!
