Avelino Perez: Dog Alebrije

This hand-carved and painted dog by Avelino Perez of La Union, Oaxaca, captures the rustic charm of traditional Oaxacan woodcarving. Painted in bold black and white with a touch of yellow on the snout, the figure has an alert, almost watchful expression. Its upright ears, long tail, and proud posture give it the look of a loyal companion, reminiscent of a Husky or German Shepherd.

Avelino, one of the early carvers from La Union, is known for his straightforward, expressive style that keeps alive the roots of Oaxacan folk art. Unlike the highly detailed, intricate designs of more contemporary workshops, his pieces carry a rustic honesty that speaks to the beginnings of the alebrije tradition.
