Antonio Alonso: Spectacular Fruit Market Vendor Paper Mache

This vibrant papier-mâché sculpture by Antonio Alonso depicts a cheerful tlacuache fruit and vegetable vendor proudly tending his colorful market stall. Every detail bursts with life, crates of oranges, tomatoes, and limes fill the front. At the same time, the stepped display overflows with bananas, carrots, chayotes, avocados, green beans, black beans, garlic, pineapples, and slices of bright red watermelon.

Each element, from the tiny fruits and vegetables to the vendor’s expressive face, is meticulously handcrafted from paper, showcasing Alonso’s incredible craftsmanship and attention to detail. His mastery of cartonería transforms humble materials into vivid works of art, where texture, color, and personality come together beautifully.

Dressed in a gray apron and yellow shirt, the tlacuache stands ready with his metal scale, embodying the warmth and authenticity of everyday Mexican markets. Through his whimsical and skillful artistry, Alonso turns this familiar scene into a joyful celebration of abundance, culture, and creativity.
