Antonio Alonso: Dance of the Flyers Papantla Paper Mache
In this imaginative papier-mâché creation, Antonio Alonso reinterprets the ancient Danza de los Voladores through his signature characters—playful tlacuaches (opossums). Perched atop the pole, one tlacuache serves as the flutist and drummer, while four others spiral gracefully downward in mid-flight, dressed in vivid red and white costumes.
Crafted entirely by hand from recycled paper, this piece fuses humor with deep respect for Mexico’s ceremonial traditions, celebrating both Indigenous ritual and popular imagination with extraordinary detail and charm.
A graduate of Oaxaca’s School of Plastic and Visual Arts, Antonio discovered papier-mâché only a few years ago, yet has already won nine major competitions, including national and state awards.
