Dante Cruz: Impressive Kaleidoscope Dog Oaxaca
Dante Cruz: Impressive Kaleidoscope Dog Oaxaca
Artist Dante Cruz heads El Sueño Zapoteco in San Martín Tilcajete, a workshop renowned for its imagination and technical ambition. This extraordinary dog is among the most spectacular pieces of painted woodcarving we have ever offered.
The carving is beautifully executed — the dog stands alert and upright, head raised, mouth slightly open, tail curving behind him with natural confidence. The face is so expressive and alive.
Every centimeter of the surface is covered in a swirling, interlocking world of pattern: paisley teardrops, concentric spirals, dotted borders, fine crosshatched grids, flowing waves and medallions, all rendered in an impossibly rich palette of teal, orange, magenta, purple, lime green, gold, and deep burgundy. The designs flow across the body like a living thing, turning corners, following contours, never repeating. The back carries a deep burgundy field where a subtle pattern emerges beneath the surface, as the worn motifs of an antique tapestry are glimpsed in the raking light. Each zone is its own complete composition, and yet the whole reads as one unified, exuberant vision.
The Xoloitzcuintli — Mexico's ancient hairless dog — was considered sacred, a guide for souls on their journey through the underworld. Dressed here in what can only be described as a painted universe, Dante's dog seems more than equal to the task. A truly exceptional piece!
