Adrian Corona: Nocturnal Bats & Blossoms Mata Ortiz Olla
Wonderful bats and flowers adorn this beautiful olla by Mata Oritz artist Adrian Corona.
All around the pot, a lively nocturnal scene unfolds: charming black bats with expressive faces glide among curling green vines, leaves, and red flowers. Each bat is carefully incised and painted, with tiny details on the wings, fur, and ears that give them personality and movement. The floral motifs echo traditional northern Mexican plant forms, creating a graceful rhythm that wraps the entire body of the vessel.
The subtle off-white clay, combined with the restrained palette of black, deep green, and warm red, gives the olla a refined, graphic look, almost like a living piece of folk art illustration on clay. It’s a sophisticated example of etched Mata Ortiz pottery, where playful imagery, masterful line work, and elegant shape come together in a single, highly collectible piece.
