Gabino Reyes: Our Lady Of Guadalupe Cactus
This wonderful maguey sculpture by Gabino Reyes brings together two of Mexico’s most beloved symbols: the agave plant and Our Lady of Guadalupe. The spiky, pale-green leaves radiate out in a perfect circle, tipped in black and edged with hand-painted details that echo the natural rhythm of a real maguey in the Oaxacan countryside.
Nestled tenderly in the central leaf is a tiny shrine to Our Lady of Guadalupe, framed by a halo of bright mini paper flowers—each one carefully twisted and painted by hand. Mexico’s patron saint, Our Lady of Guadalupe, is celebrated every year on December 12, a day when millions of people bring flowers, sing las mañanitas, and give thanks for her protection.
Here, Gabino honors that deep devotion by placing her at the heart of the maguey. This plant has sustained communities for centuries and is a national emblem in its own right, linked to mezcal, pulque, and everyday life in rural Mexico. The result is a poetic piece of folk art: an agave that doesn’t just decorate a space, but quietly celebrates faith, gratitude, and the beauty of Mexican tradition.
