Carolina Sandoval & Kengi: Winged Frog Woodcarving
This fantastic frog by Carolina Sandoval is pure fun. The colors are so bright they immediately catch your eye. Those vivid orange wings, the blue-purple body, and all the little “water ripple” patterns make it look like it’s about to leap into some magical pond.
You can really see Carolina’s hand here: trademark use of her textile heritage, strong graphic lines, fearless color mixes, and patterns that feel a bit like woven textiles. That comes from her collaboration with her husband Kengi Santos, where they blend Oaxacan woodcarving with the rhythm and repetition of textile design.
And then there’s the fountain of yarn on top. It’s such a playful touch, like the frog’s thoughts are shooting straight into the air. It gives the whole piece movement, as if it’s caught mid-moment.
It’s a lively, imaginative creature, the kind of piece you recognize right away as Carolina Sandoval and Kengi: fresh, contemporary, and full of personality.
