Antonio Alonso: Tacos Vendor Paper Mache

Antonio Alonso brings humor and everyday Mexican life into his art with this witty papier-mâché sculpture of a tlacuache (opossum) taquero preparing tacos al pastor. Standing proudly beside a detailed trompo of spinning meat, the character wears a bright orange and yellow apron and holds a plate of freshly made tacos.

With its expressive posture and vivid, hand-painted details, this piece captures the warmth, color, and playfulness of Mexico’s street food culture, where tradition and imagination come together in the most unexpected ways.

Antonio Alonso is one of Oaxaca’s rising masters of cartonería,  the intricate art of papier-mâché sculpture. Working from his studio in Oaxaca City, he transforms recycled paper, cardboard, and wire into expressive figures that celebrate Mexico’s imagination and identity. His pieces often feature Xoloitzcuintles, opossums, Tehuanas (Oaxacan women), and other emblematic characters of Oaxacan life, blending humor, symbolism, and social reflection.
