Huichol: Yarn Butterfly Gold Gourd
This exquisite natural gourd has been beautifully transformed by Huichol (Wixárika) artists using the traditional yarn-painting technique known as nierika, in which beeswax and resin are applied to the surface, and fine strands of yarn are carefully placed by hand to form intricate designs.
The top half of the gourd features soft earth-tone yarns—warm grays, creams, and golds—arranged in elegant Huichol motifs. At the center is a butterfly, a powerful symbol of good luck, transformation, and renewal in Wixárika tradition. Surrounding it are floral and petal-like forms that represent life, growth, and the blessings of nature. A flowing band of patterned lines encircles the gourd, echoing the natural movements of wind and water.
The lower portion is painted in warm metallic gold, giving the piece a refined, contemporary finish while allowing the gourd's organic form to shine.
