Saul Aragon: Running Hare Oaxaca

When I look at this rabbit woodcarving by artist Saul Aragon, the first thing I feel is motion, as if it’s caught in that moment before it launches. The body is carved low and aerodynamic, the back arched, and those beautiful, long ears sweep upward like sails, giving the whole figure a forward-driving energy even while it’s perfectly still.

I love the coloring because it’s warm and refined, not loud: creamy base tones layered with honey-gold, cinnamon, and deep espresso bands, all tied together with crisp black linework and tiny red accents that make the patterns glow. Every section feels intentional—Greek-key borders, tight crosshatching, and geometric fields that read almost like woven textiles wrapping around muscle and bone.

And the rabbit is so expressive. The face has that alert, focused look!
