The graceful silhouette gives the carving wonderful movement, while the restrained black, white, and gray palette turns attention immediately to the extraordinary painted detail.

Neri and Soledad Cruz cover the copal wood surface with remarkably fine geometric patterns. Tiny triangles, woven motifs, rows of dots, delicate linear borders, and alternating fields of gray create a design that changes subtly across the body. The large patterned areas on the legs contrast beautifully with the intricate work along the spine, face, and tail. Warm amber eyes provide the only strong touch of color, giving the cat an especially expressive gaze.

What makes this alebrije particularly compelling is the discipline of the painting. Even within such a limited palette, every section feels distinct and carefully considered. The patterns follow the curves of the carving, emphasizing the raised back, elongated legs, and sweeping tail rather than simply decorating the surface.

Hand-carved from copal wood and meticulously hand-painted in Oaxaca by Neri and Soledad Cruz, this authentic Oaxacan wood carving is a sophisticated contemporary interpretation of one of the most familiar and expressive animals in Mexican folk art.

Origin: Oaxaca
Dimensions: 5.5" Tall × 4.5" Long × 2" Wide

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0245/1069/3451/files/Cat-Copal-Alebrije-Mexican-Folk-SoledadC-1177.jpg?v=1793990590
