Manuel Cruz: Catrin & Catrina

Fabulous Day of the Dead figurines by Manuel Cruz Prudencio. These couple of Catrin and Catrina are marvelously carved and very nicely painted. Catrin is a Spanish word that means a rich man, and Catrina is a rich woman. The Day of the Dead catrina was a creation of Jose Guadalupe Posada, a great cartoonist and illustrator of the early 20th Century. The Catrina was meant to satirize the life of the upper classes during the reign of Mexican dictator Porfirio Diaz.
