A pair of elderly tlacuaches stands in front of a tiered altar, the gentleman leaning on his cane while his companion carries a woven basket. Their gentle expressions and everyday clothing give the scene the feeling of a family visit to an ofrenda rather than a formal display.

Alonso fills the altar with the foods and decorations associated with Día de los Muertos. There is pan de muerto, cookies, jícama, guayabas, fruit, cempasúchil flowers, candles, and colorful papel picado. A tiny bottle labeled “Carísima” playfully imitates Corona beer, adding the kind of humor that runs through much of Alonso’s work. At the center is a framed photograph of an elderly tlacuache couple, turning the entire sculpture into an affectionate remembrance of those who have died.

One of my favorite details is the tall green arch surrounding the altar, made to resemble sugar cane. Sugar cane, fruit, bread, favorite drinks, flowers, and personal foods all belong naturally on Mexican ofrendas, where offerings are chosen to welcome the dead with things they enjoyed in life.

The sheer amount of hand-built detail is what makes this piece so engaging. Tiny papel picado banners, individually modeled foods, paper flowers, the miniature basket, cane, framed portrait, and carefully arranged offerings reward close looking. Antonio Alonso takes a deeply meaningful Mexican tradition and tells it with warmth, humor, and remarkable imagination.

Origin: Oaxaca
Dimensions: 12''Tall 7.5''Long 6.5''Wide

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0245/1069/3451/files/Day-of-Dead-Ofrenda-Mexican-Folk-Art-2876.jpg?v=1791565697
