Luis Pablo: Howling Coyote Woodcarving

This gorgeous coyote by Luis Pablo has such a lively, modern presence. The sleek, elongated body sits in a classic howling pose, nose lifted to the sky, and the long tail stretched gracefully behind, almost like a painted brushstroke.

Luis works with strong, clear shapes and then fills them with joyful color. Here, he uses bright magenta as the main tone, covered in turquoise “feather” ovals that give the fur a rhythmic movement. The tail becomes its own celebration of pattern, with bands of pink, orange, and blue that feel almost like a festive textile.

Each part of the coyote has its own personality: pink dotted haunches, orange legs touched with tiny black strokes, and a turquoise face with a keen, alert eye. The result is a piece that feels playful and contemporary, while still rooted in the tradition of Oaxacan woodcarving.
